An appeal
This is my first non-friends-locked post in a while. If you happen to be new here, please comment or add me and I'll be happy to add you.

As some of you know, my mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer several years ago. She has faced this with strength and courage that I can only begin to grasp. She continues to work a demanding full-time job teaching kindergarten in an inner-city school in Boston while undergoing regular chemotherapy treatments, currently three times a month.

In a couple of weeks, she will be participating in the Massachusetts Run/Walk for the Whisper, which benefits ovarian cancer education and awareness.

I fully understand that many reading this are not in a position financially to help or already have worthy causes that they support.

If you are interested in helping out with some small amount, you can comment or email me at rsilva444 at yahoo dot com. You can also send a donation via paypal to that address. The names and addresses of contributors get turned in with the sponsor form, so please include your contact information if you want it turned in (for tax deduction purposes, etc). If you'd rather not, then the money you contribute will be submitted under my name.

What is the average donation?

The suggested donations for sponsoring a walker are from $25 to $100. Each walker is asked to try to raise at least $150 (I'm sure my mom will raise considerably more than that).

I'd be quite happy with people donating smaller amounts. A couple of bucks here and there all adds up and it all helps.

We will probably give $50 or $100 depending on how our budget is looking when we actually write the check.

Does the tax deduction thing work for overseas donations? (I can use paypal).
My donations to cancer charities in UK are 'gift-aided' which I assume is the same thing. I'll wait for your comment before I send anything.

I'm not sure how much help I can be on this question. Whether a donation to this charity is tax deductable for you would depend on UK tax laws. I'm not familiar with the term "gift-aided". Sorry.

I can certainly submit an overseas address, and I assume that all contributors get some kind of acknowledgement of their gift for tax records purposes.

'Gift -aid' means the charity gets the tax due so it increases your donation. Not sure how it works. Will just send a paypal donation anyway.
BTW I (along with two of my friends) am part of an ovarian cancer research screening programme here - it just means donating blood samples occasionally and filling in interminable questionnaires. Thought you might be interested.

Got it! Thank you very much.

And I'm glad to hear you're doing the research screening. Every bit of research helps.
